PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE -- FEBRUARY 2010

Dear South Florida Members,

Can you believe how cold it was last month? My patio registered 32 degrees one morning! At times I thought I was back in New York City, not in South Florida. I hope all your plants made it through the cold. My plants in the greenhouse are fine, but those outside are losing leaves, even though they were covered with sheets, or brought under cover. But luckily we do live in South Florida, and most plants will recover and grow back.

It's hard to believe, but our 64th Miami International Orchid Show is just around the corner. I would love to see all members get involved with the show, and there are many different ways to do that. First of all, we would all love to see your plants on display. You never know what beauty in your collection could come home with a trophy or ribbon. Take time now to groom and stake your plants so they open properly and present well.

Several of our members are chairing committees that need volunteers. Christa Collins is in charge of the Hospitality Booth. She and her members give out information regarding the show, sell raffle tickets for a large screen TV and orchid plants. Michael O'Dea will be looking for members to give walking tours. That involves showing a small group of people the highlights of the exhibits and answering general questions. People really appreciate these tours, and they are a lot of fun. There are other volunteer positions available, so please speak to Ellen at the meeting, or speak to Christa, Michael or myself.

There are also sponsorship opportunities available for trophies which is a wonderful way to honor someone or advertise your business. Speak to Ellen at the meeting and see what trophies are still available.

As you can see, there are many ways to be involved in the production of our show. I hope to see all of you there enjoying the beauty that our show brings. Remember to wear your badges, as paid members will be allowed to enter, free of charge, if their membership badges are displayed. We wish Leigh Elliot a very speedy recovery and hope to see him back at our meetings.

Happy Valentine's Day to all! Remember your loved ones with an orchid, a wonderful living gift.

Good growing,

Judy Mezey
President
